New Non-Exec Board Members Appointed to SHA Board

The Scottish Handball Association are delighted to announce the appointment of three new Board Members following a recent recruitment exercise.

Coming from a variety of professional backgrounds, we are delighted to announce the appointments of:

  • Charles Paterson
  • Catherine (Katie) Panteli
  • Stuart Monteith

Charles is a well-know member of the Scottish sporting family.  After many years as a Sky Sports Scotland correspondent, reporter, producer and commentator and being involved in many sports, Charles became the Head of Communications for Cricket Scotland in January 2023.  He is still actively involved in running events in other Sports too, for example the recently held PFA Scotland Annual Awards.

With a huge amount to offer in terms of media, communications and commercial perspectives, Charles joins Scottish Handball at a great time in our evolution.

Katie is a corporate solicitor with Morton Fraser MacRoberts based in Edinburgh, but with a huge interest and experience across many other areas, and notably, a life-long interest and involvement in sport.  She is a qualified football coach and has also worked in a number of not-for-profit environments; working on projects from systems implementation to financial and legal compliance, as well as Government grant management with an international focus.

Katie was keen to find an organisation that matched her work ethic and values in a non-executive capacity, and joins us at a great time where her skills, attention to detail and capabilities will be fully used.  She has already agreed to help lead Board efforts in our Wellbeing & Safeguarding and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion spaces by taking up the Board seat on our Equalities Working Group; and also playing an active role in our work towards even further inclusion across Handball (known as “MTI – moving to inclusion”) in Scotland.

Stuart is the Workforce Development Manager for Scottish Squash.  His previous experience as both a trainee news Reporter and also as a Teacher – before the world of Sports Governing Bodies – gives Stuart a significant understanding of the world of Coaching and Development, alongside telling those stories, all of which is really important for us here at Scottish Handball.  As a young professional himself, he offers us a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and his desire to use sport as a mechanism for helping positively change the lives of people and society matches our values extremely well.

We are delighted to welcome all three new Board members to the Scottish Handball Family and look forward to their contributions in the coming months and years.

Notes for Editors: Originally founded in 1972, the Scottish Handball Association employs 4.5 people and was announced as Sport Governing Body of the Year 2022 at the Scottish Sports Awards ceremony in December 2022.  Working closely with SportScotland, the European Handball Federation (EHF), the International Handball Federation (IHF), the SHA enables thousands of children and young people to play Handball across Scotland.  We also deliver training to many young sports leaders across Scotland.  There are many primary and secondary School Handball Festivals as a result; and we see many young athletes continue their Handball journey by joining their local clubs.  A number have gone on to play professionally with European clubs, as well as representing Scotland and Team GB in international competition.  We have vibrant domestic league and cup competitions.  The current highlight of the domestic season is the season-ending British Handball Super Cup – where the top two teams from Scotland (Women and Men) play against the top two teams from England.  The NorDan British Handball Super Cup was broadcast live on BBC Sport in May 2022 and May 2024, and was broadcast live on other streaming platforms in 2023 and 2025.
